Nice press for tomorrow's gig in Columbia, SC - January 5, 2016

Looking forward to my solo show tomorrow, January 6, at Foxfield Bar & Grille in Columbia. Here is what Jordan Lawrence said in this week's Free-Times:

"The great thing about Shrimp City Slim is that he's more than a mere bluesman. Sure, the institutional Charleston pianist and promoter can rip through with bluesy rock abandon, as evidenced by "Transatlantic Blues Project", his 2014 live album with the Polish band Green Grass. But he's just as liable to hit you with a Brian Wilson-esque ballad or offer some heady rambling that recalls the best years of Randy Newman."

Thanks, Jordan! See you all there! 8-11 pm.

Back at the Mills House Hotel (downtown Charleston, SC) - January 3, 2016

Very pleased to announce that LIVE PIANO BLUES is returning to historic downtown Charleston, every Thursday (5-8 pm) and Sunday (11 am-2 pm) at the legendary Mills House Hotel, 115 Meeting Street. SCS performing solo in the First Shot lounge (or courtyard, weather-permitting). Sensational vintage bar/restaurant, no cover, an intriguing mix of visitors and locals. See you there!

Back on the radio - January 1, 2016

Stay tuned for information about our new blues radio program on The Bridge at 1055 (WCOO 105.5 FM and streaming worldwide at

"Good Mornin', Blues" will follow in the tradition of our "Blues in the Night" on WSCI 89.4 FM (SC Public Radio, 1984-2001), "Blue Monday" on The Breeze Radio Network (four stations regionally, 1996-1999), "Nothin' But the Blues" (WVVO AM, early 1990s), and "Blues on The Bridge" (five years, WCOO The Bridge at 1055).

We will play the legends as well as deserving purveyors of contemporary blues, with an inclination toward blues of the Carolinas. We will promote this program to a worldwide audience.

Coming soon!

February gigs in Mexico - November 28, 2015

The love affair with Mexico continues. Ever since attending La Universidad de las Americas in Cholula, Puebla in 1971-1972, I've had a fixation with our neighbor to the South and have made many return visits to virtually every part of that amazing country.

My only gigging in Mexico was during those school years (unnamed band with Frank Corkrum on acoustic guitar, Raford Rogers on flutes and whistles, and sometimes Lee Joffe on vocals...all original songs but we never recorded) AND a week of gigs in Guadalajara a decade or so ago - blues with a heavy emphasis on material from "Gone With the Wind" and lots of Chicago stuff.

This time around, I am playing two solo shows: Saturday, February 6 at Ruta 61 (Mexico DF) and Friday, February 12 at Cafe Cultural La Nueva Babel in Oaxaca.

Very excited to say the least. If you are anywhere nearby, please stop in and say hi :)

Congratulations to Drink Small on his NEA award - June 12, 2015

Well, you've surely heard by now - Drink Small, South Carolina's blues legend (born 1933), has just been awarded the national folk heritage award by the National Endowment for the Arts. Details at This is America's highest honor bestowed on traditional artists and we can't think of anyone more deserving.

Drink's "Blues Doctor: Live & Outrageous!", released first on cassette in 1988, was our debut release on Erwin Music (the label). It was nominated for a WC Handy Award (now known as BMAs) in that year and has gotten rave reviews and airplay everywhere.
